A different world

THE REALITY CHECK II
Islay McLeod's photo essay from Springburn, a few minutes from Glasgow city centre

It's the Sunday of a big Celtic game – crowds
gather outside local pubs

But one or two fans haven't lived to see the result

Once Springburn built railway locomotives for the world.
Now it feels more like the end of the line

Yet some of the housing has been improved
– well, modernised at least

Springburn leisure centre

But despite the facilities, it remains one of the
poorest places in Britain

Nowhere poorer than in the notorious Red Road estate

Opposite that block, someone still cares
– a man picking up weeds outside a pub

Evidence too of social activism, as Springburn campaigns
to keep a primary school open

This too is Springburn – right at the heart of it

But across the road, there's this
