The powerful and the powerless in Glasgow II



 

 




Now there are nine


Three asylum seekers, two men and a woman, believed to be in their twenties, jumped from the 15th floor of a tower block in the Springburn district of Glasgow early on Sunday morning. They are not the first suicides of asylum seekers in the city. Here are six others:

Uddhav Bhandavi
Age: 40
Country of origin: Nepal
Date of death: March 2007
Doused himeslf in petrol and set fire to himself in the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal Centre in Glasgow. Died from severe burns two days later. Had been in Glasgow for six years.

Zamiva Sadigova
Age: 51
Country of origin: Aberbaijan
Date of death: August 2006
Jumped to her death in Knightswood as officers and police were breaking down her door in an attempt to section her under the Mental Health Act. Had said she would 'die rather than go back'.

Tran Quang Tung
Age: 23
Country of origin: Vietnam
Date of death: 23 July 2004
Hanged himself in Dungavel detention centre.

Zekria Ghulam Mohammed
Age: 27
Country of origin: Afghanistan
Date of death 18 May 2004
Found hanged in Dennistoun district of the city, four years after arrival in Scotland. His leave to remain had been refused and he was being threatened with deportation. Had trained as a dentist in Afghanistan. Friends reported that he was 'ashamed and broken' and 'without hope'.

Vasilly Todchuk
Age: 24
Country of origin: Russia
Date of death: September 2003
Hanged on a building site in Govan. Several days before his death, had been advised that he was to be deported.

Liu Jin Wu
Age: 35
Country of origin: China
Date of death: 5 May 2003
Took his own life in Barlinnie Prison. Said to be suffering from a psychotic disorder.
